⚠ The descent from the summit to the waterfalls is off-path through ravines, with almost vertical sections and a risk of falling. The author of the track himself recommends that, unless you are used to this terrain, you walk only the Hoz de Carboneros path: to the waterfalls and back the same way.

What the walk is like

From the chain you follow the track past a pond and a stone water tank until, shortly before it ends, a path leaves to the right along the foot of the slope, beside a water-intake pipe. After crossing the Arroyo de la Gimena you climb straight up a long, very steep scree slope, with the remains of old charcoal pits on either side.

Near the top a rocky outcrop appears with caves that form a natural vault with windows. Skirting it on the right you reach the top of the Collado de Pasamontes, at about 1,400 m, with a cairn and views of the San Pablo de los Montes range, Hontanar, Navahermosa and Los Navalmorales; up here there are Cruziana fossils. From here you drop into the gorge of the Trevejiles stream, the Hoz de Carboneros, with a string of waterfalls, and leave it on the marked path by the Arroyo de la Gimena, returning along tracks to the start.

Practical information

What to take

  • Plenty of water and something to eat
  • Hiking boots
  • Sun cream, a cap and sunglasses
  • A charged phone with the track downloaded
  • A lead for your dog

Rules in the hills

  • Stay on tracks and paths
  • Close any gates you open
  • No fires
  • Respect livestock and private estates
  • During the hunting season, avoid hunt days
  • Take your rubbish home

🐕 Not recommended for dogs because of the rocky descent. The short option, along the Hoz path to the waterfalls, is fine for dogs used to the hills, always on a lead.

No booking or permit is needed. Carry the track on your phone or a GPS: the mountain section is not waymarked. Do not attempt the ravine descent on wet rock.

Walk the route in reverse only as far as the waterfalls on the marked path, and come back the same way.

Are there fossils on the walk?

Yes, near the summit there are Cruziana trace fossils, Ordovician trilobite trails. They must not be removed.

Where does it start?

On the tracks leaving La Milagra, in Navahermosa, 6.8 km from Cork Valley.
