La Viñuela Walk: hiking in the Montes de Toledo
The long walk through the heart of the park: 13 km through the shaded valley of the Viñuela stream, with its dense understorey of strawberry trees, a wood of centuries-old Pyrenean oaks and the wide horizons of the raña of Cabañeros, red deer country.

Waypoints and how to get there
The route starts at the car park built by the park on the CM-4017, the road linking Horcajo de los Montes with Retuerta del Bullaque, between kilometre posts 80 and 81: 17 km from Horcajo and 14 km from Retuerta. The track leaves directly from the road.

What the walk is like
From the CM-4017 car park, the track climbs the valley of the Viñuela stream along its shaded side, below the Sierra del Chorito, through a dense understorey of strawberry trees, and enters the oak wood, with a stand of sturdy, centuries-old Pyrenean oaks. This is the coolest, shadiest part of the walk.
The path then opens onto the raña of Cabañeros, the park’s great plain, with panoramic views and, almost always, red deer in sight — in September and October you can hear the rut. The ground fills with rockrose and the return crosses a Portuguese oak wood and passes the La Hornera junction before closing the semicircle: 13 km in all, 150 m of ascent and between 3 and 3.5 hours. There are stony sections: wear proper footwear.

How long is the La Viñuela walk?
13 km on a semicircular route, with 150 m of ascent and between 3 and 3.5 hours according to the park's official fact sheet. It is the longest of the walks we cover.
Where can I see red deer in Cabañeros?
The raña, the park's great open plain, is the best place, and this route crosses it. In September and October you can hear the rut, when the stags bellow.
Do I need a guide for La Viñuela?
Not if you walk it on your own. Groups of more than 15 people must go with a park guide, requested through the park.
Is the La Viñuela walk suitable for dogs?
Yes, on a lead. Bear in mind that it is 13 km with little shade on the raña section, so carry water for your dog too.
