Where you actually are when you sleep here
Cork Valley sits on 70 private hectares in Hontanar, in the Montes de Toledo, inside the buffer zone of Cabañeros National Park. The park was declared on 20 November 1995 and protects 40,856 hectares of the best Mediterranean forest left in Europe.
From the estate to the Casa Palillos gate, the usual way into the park, it is 75 km by road. But much of the wildlife on this page does not stop at the park boundary: the raña plain, the holm oak woodland and the hills carry on outside it, and from the terrace of a cabin you hear and see more than you would expect.
The cinereous vulture
Cabañeros holds one of the most important breeding nuclei of cinereous vulture in the world. In 2025 the park counted 311 breeding pairs and 253 fledged chicks, against 299 pairs and 230 chicks in 2024.
It is the easiest large bird to see: it soars over the holm oaks all year round, with no migration involved. All it takes is looking up on a morning with thermals. It shares the sky with the griffon vulture, commoner and shorter-tailed.

The Spanish imperial eagle
It is listed as endangered, and four pairs breed inside Cabañeros National Park.
Seeing one is a matter of luck and patience. It helps to know what you are looking for: a large dark silhouette with white shoulder patches, hunting over the raña and nesting in the old pines and holm oaks of the hills.
Easier, in the same sky: the short-toed snake eagle, which hangs motionless in the air looking for snakes, and the booted eagle. And along the water and the shaded slopes, the black stork, far more discreet than the white one.

The Iberian lynx
The Montes de Toledo are today one of the strongholds of the Iberian lynx. The 2025 census by the Castilla-La Mancha regional government counted 527 animals in the Montes de Toledo, with 114 territorial females and 224 cubs. In the 2024 census, of the 2,401 lynx on the whole peninsula, 942 were in Castilla-La Mancha.
In 2023 Cabañeros was designated a stepping stone for the recolonisation of the species. That said, and not to sell what we cannot deliver: seeing a lynx is very unlikely. It is crepuscular, it avoids people and it holds huge territories. The people who manage it have usually been trying for years.
The rut
This is the time of year when wildlife stops being something you go looking for and reaches you in bed. Red deer stags bellow to hold territory and their groups of hinds.
When: from late September to mid-October. What time: at dawn and at dusk, when they call most. Where, inside the park: the Rocigalgo viewpoint and the Raña de Santiago.
Red deer and wild boar are the most abundant large mammals here; there is also roe deer, smaller and far more elusive.
The plain, the hills and the water
Cabañeros makes more sense split into three landscapes, because each one has its own animals.
The raña
The open plain. Great bustard, stone curlew, white stork and red-footed falcon. This is where the deer graze and where the big raptors come down to hunt. Cinereous and griffon vultures, all year round.
The hills
Holm oak, cork oak and Portuguese oak on the slopes. Short-toed snake eagle, booted eagle and black stork. This is the refuge of the wild boar, the roe deer and the lynx.
The water
Streams and pools. Barbel, boga and spined loach; and the jarabugo, a small endangered fish. Among the amphibians, the Iberian ribbed newt.
What you see, season by season
March to June
The best time for birds: raptors breed and the summer visitors arrive. The plain is green and in flower. White stork on the flats and red-footed falcon on passage.
July and August
Heat, and dead hours in the middle of the day. Activity concentrates at dawn and around the pools at dusk. Vultures riding the midday thermals.
September to November
The rut, from late September to mid-October. After that the hills go quiet and the wintering birds move in.
December to February
Large gatherings of vultures at natural feeding points, and clear days of a transparency you do not get again. It is also the best season for the night sky.
Wildlife figures: Cabañeros National Park (2024 and 2025 counts) and the Iberian lynx census of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government (2024 and 2025).
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The Cork Valley estate lies in the park buffer zone and shares the same landscape: holm oak woodland, dehesa and hills. Deer, wild boar, vultures and raptors are seen from the estate itself and from the roads around it. For the guided four-wheel-drive trips across the raña you do need to enter the park, 75 km from the estate.
From late September to mid-October. The bellowing is loudest at dawn and dusk, and on quiet nights you can hear it from the terrace of your cabin.
Yes. The 2025 census by the Castilla-La Mancha regional government counted 527 lynx in the Montes de Toledo, with 114 territorial females and 224 cubs. Seeing one is another matter: it is crepuscular, elusive and holds very large territories, so a sighting is very unlikely.
Red deer and wild boar by a distance, and cinereous and griffon vultures in the air all year round. Cabañeros holds one of the most important breeding nuclei of cinereous vulture in the world: 311 breeding pairs and 253 fledged chicks in 2025.
Yes. Cork Valley is pet friendly and your dog sleeps inside the accommodation, not in a separate area, with 70 hectares to run in. Near the hills, and in the breeding season, keep it on a lead.
No guide needed. A pair of binoculars, an early start and some patience go a long way. For the routes inside the park there are official guided visits, worth booking in advance.
