The deer rut in the Montes de Toledo

Every autumn, for a few weeks, red deer stags stand out in the middle of the plain and bellow. The sound carries for kilometres and is like nothing else. In the Montes de Toledo, and above all in Cabañeros National Park, it happens in one of the finest settings in Spain to see and hear it.

When the rut happens

From mid-September to mid-October. The exact date is not on a calendar: it is set off by falling temperatures and the first rains, so some years it comes early and others late. If you come during that month, the odds of hearing it are high.

The best hours are dawn and dusk. In the cool the deer are active and stay in view out on the plain; as the day warms they withdraw into the scrub.

Cabañeros National Park protects around 45,000 hectares of Mediterranean forest and raña between Toledo and Ciudad Real. Its jewel for the rut is La Raña, a grassy plain of thousands of hectares that has earned the nickname of the Spanish Serengeti: in season thousands of deer gather there and seeing them stops being a matter of luck.

And it is not only deer. On the same plain you regularly see the cinereous vulture and the Spanish imperial eagle, two of the rarest birds in Europe.

How to see it

• Guided 4×4 route across La Raña. It is the only way into the restricted zone of the park. It lasts about three hours, leaves from several visitor centres and costs around €29–32 per person. In rut season it fills up: book ahead.
• Free walking trails. The park has waymarked trails you can walk on your own and for free. The best known one near here is the Boquerón del Estena, in Navas de Estena, with marine fossils in the rock.
• Visitor centres. Casa Palillos, Horcajo de los Montes and Torre de Abraham. Check opening times before you go, because not all of them open every day.

Bring binoculars: the deer move off as soon as a vehicle approaches and the viewing distance is long. And do not leave the tracks or approach rutting stags: they are big, territorial animals in the middle of a dispute.

From Cork Valley

Cork Valley is in Hontanar, inside the buffer area of Cabañeros National Park. The nearest gateway to the park, Navas de Estena, is 21.4 km away on the same road the estate sits on. Horcajo de los Montes is 63.6 km away and Casa Palillos 78 km.

The estate is 70 private hectares of the same Mediterranean forest: centuries-old holm oaks, cork oaks and open dehesa. Here too you regularly see deer, along with birds of prey and our horses, which roam free across the estate.

And when night falls the scene changes: Cork Valley is a certified Starlight Destination, so the dusk rut is followed by a sky with the Milky Way visible to the naked eye. You will sleep in a timber cabin or a Mirror House, adults only, 130 km from Madrid.
