The sky was never the problem. The light was.
From central Madrid, on a clear moonless night, you can pick out a handful of stars, a planet or two, and very little else. The sky is still all there; the city's glow simply erases it. Stargazing near Madrid is not a matter of waiting for good weather. It is a matter of getting far enough from the lights, and no farther.
Far enough is 130 km to the south-west. In the valley of Hontanar, in the Montes de Toledo, there is no sizeable town in any direction. Cork Valley occupies 70 private hectares on the edge of Cabañeros National Park, and from the terrace of any of its cabins the band of the Milky Way is visible without a telescope, without an app, and without going out to look for it.

What you see, month by month
The sky changes every month. These are the next twelve, with the moonless nights of each one — the five before and the five after the new moon — and the meteor showers that fall inside them.
What is coming up
Dates checked against the International Meteor Organization calendar and Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional. Hourly rates are the theoretical maximum under ideal conditions: dark sky, high radiant, no moon. Here you get all three.
How to look at a sky like this
You need no equipment. You need patience, and to switch things off.
- ✓Twenty minutes without your phone. That is how long the eye takes to adapt to darkness, and a screen undoes it in a second. It is the only real requirement.
- ✓If you need light, make it red. Red does not destroy dark adaptation. Almost every head torch has that mode.
- ✓Binoculars before a telescope. An ordinary 7x50 or 10x50 pair will show you lunar craters, the moons of Jupiter and the whole Pleiades cluster. A telescope shows you more things, and far fewer of them at once.
- ✓Lie down. Half an hour flat on your back sees more sky than two hours standing with a cricked neck.
- ✓Check the moon phase before you book. It changes the night far more than the time of year does.

Where to sleep under it
Cork Valley is an adults-only estate spread over 70 hectares: wooden cabins and mirror houses set well apart from one another, some with a private Nordic hot tub, a sauna or their own pool. Each has its own terrace, so the sky is available without leaving your door.
Dogs are welcome. If you want to see the estate before you book, it is described on our estate, and the cabins and mirror houses are on accommodation.
