Mushroom picking in the Montes de Toledo
From October to December, once the autumn rains arrive, the holm-oak, rockrose and pine woods of the Montes de Toledo fill up with wild mushrooms: saffron milk caps, porcini, Caesar’s mushrooms and more. Here is when to go, what to look for and the rules you need to follow in Castilla-La Mancha.

The main season runs from October to December. Mushrooms appear a few days after the first autumn rains, while the ground is damp and still mild, and the first frosts usually bring the season to an end.
The Montes de Toledo mix holm oak, cork oak, oak, rockrose and pine, and each habitat has its own mushrooms, so a single walk can give you saffron milk caps under the pines and porcini under the holm oaks.

Mushrooms of the Montes de Toledo
These are the edible species recorded in the area. Before eating any of them, have them identified by someone who knows.
- ✓Saffron milk cap (Lactarius deliciosus). In the pine woods. The most sought-after mushroom of the autumn.
- ✓Porcini (Boletus aereus and Boletus edulis). Under holm oaks, cork oaks and oaks. Boletus edulis also grows with gum rockrose.
- ✓Caesar’s mushroom (Amanita caesarea). In holm-oak and oak woods. Highly prized, but easily confused with toxic species.
- ✓King oyster mushroom (seta de cardo). In meadows and open ground, next to thistles.
- ✓Parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera). In meadows and woodland clearings, with its large, scaly cap.
- ✓Grey knight (Tricholoma portentosum). A late-season mushroom, when the cold starts.

The rules in Castilla-La Mancha
Mushroom picking in the countryside of Castilla-La Mancha is regulated by the Order of 15/11/2016 (DOCM no. 226, 21 November 2016). The main points:
- ✓For your own use. Occasional, non-commercial picking is free and needs no regional licence.
- ✓Up to 5 kg or 10 litres per person per day. Some estates can set different limits in their management plans.
- ✓The mushrooms belong to the landowner. If picking is not allowed, it must be signposted. As almost all the land is private, ask permission.
- ✓Knife and basket only. Rakes, sickles, hoes, digging up the soil and plastic bags or buckets are banned. Fill in any holes with the same soil.
- ✓Never at night. And leave very young or overripe mushrooms where they are.
- ✓Watch out for hunts. Picking is not allowed where a hunt (montería) has been announced or where timber is being felled. In the Montes de Toledo this is common in autumn and winter.
Inside Cabañeros National Park, right next to Cork Valley, the rules are stricter: we recommend not picking mushrooms inside the park.
Safety: if in doubt, leave it
The Montes de Toledo also have deadly mushrooms, such as the death cap (Amanita phalloides) and several Lepiota species that look like edible ones. The classic mix-up is Caesar’s mushroom with the fly agaric, which in bad weather can lose its white spots and turn orange.
Never eat a mushroom that has not been properly identified, do not mix species in your basket and do not eat them raw. If anyone feels unwell after eating mushrooms, call 112 or the Spanish Toxicology Information Service, +34 91 562 04 20, open 24 hours.
If it is your first time, go with someone who knows. Every November the Asociación Micológica Toletum and the Diputación de Toledo organise mycological days in the province, with field outings and identification sessions.

Make a weekend of it
Autumn is the best season in the Montes de Toledo: mushrooms and one of our walks from Hontanar in the morning; the red deer rut or an olive mill tour in the afternoon; and from November, the cranes in Cabañeros.
Cork Valley has seven kinds of accommodation for two, timber cabins and Mirror Houses with a private hot tub, 55 km from Toledo and 130 km from Madrid. Adults only and dog friendly.
