How to choose your walk
If you are with children or want something easy
- El Acebo and Las Fuentes: 3 km, almost flat, with an accessible boardwalk at the start.
- Boquerón del Estena: 6 km there and back beside the river, with hardly any climb.
If you want landscape and a little more effort
- Plaza de los Moros: 3.5 km circular up to a 812 m summit.
- El Chorro de los Navalucillos: the most famous waterfall in the park.
- La Viñuela: 13 km through the oak wood and the deer plain.

Los Navalucillos (Toledo) · 37.8 km from Cork Valley
The most famous waterfall in Cabañeros, among oak woods with yews, hollies and birches — botanical rarities at this latitude — and, for the keener walkers, the climb to the Rocigalgo, the highest point of the Montes de Toledo at 1,448 m.
Boquerón del Estena walk · hiking in Toledo
Navas de Estena (Ciudad Real) · 22.2 km from Cork Valley
The most popular walk in Cabañeros and one of the easiest: a stroll beside the river Estena to the gorge the water has cut through the quartzite, among holm oaks, cork oaks, Portuguese oaks and yews, with the tracks of marine worms from more than 400 million years ago in the rocks along the path.
El Acebo and Las Fuentes walk · hiking in Toledo
Navas de Estena (Ciudad Real) · 22.2 km from Cork Valley
The most accessible walk in the park: an almost flat stroll from the Tabla del Acebo picnic area, with an accessible boardwalk at the start, a viewpoint facing the Boquerón del Estena, woodland of holm, Portuguese and Pyrenean oak, two fresh-water springs and a peat bog.

Horcajo de los Montes (Ciudad Real) · 64.5 km from Cork Valley
A short waymarked climb to the summit of La Umbría (812 m), the Plaza de los Moros, where the remains of a Bronze Age settlement survive and one of the finest panoramas of the Montes de Toledo opens up, with cinereous vultures, griffon vultures and golden eagles in the sky.
La Viñuela walk · hiking in Toledo
CM-4017, Horcajo–Retuerta del Bullaque (Ciudad Real) · 46.6 km from Cork Valley
The long walk through the heart of the park: 13 km between the shaded valley of the Viñuela stream, with its dense understorey of strawberry trees, the wood of centuries-old Pyrenean oaks and the open horizons of the Cabañeros raña, deer country.
When to go
The best season for walking here runs from autumn to spring. The waterfalls carry water between October and May — in a dry summer El Chorro can be reduced to a trickle — and between September and October you can hear the deer rut out on the raña. In summer the heat and the lack of shade in the open stretches make an early start advisable.

Which is the best hiking route in the Montes de Toledo?
It depends what you are after. El Chorro de los Navalucillos is the most spectacular for its waterfall; the Boquerón del Estena, the most popular and one of the easiest; El Acebo and Las Fuentes, the most accessible, with a boardwalk and barely 10 m of climb; the Plaza de los Moros, the best panorama, with a Bronze Age settlement at the top; and La Viñuela, the longest, with the deer plain.
Can you hike in Cabañeros with a dog?
Yes. The park allows dogs on every walking route as long as they are on a lead. They cannot go inside the visitor centres. All five walks on this page can be done with a dog.
Do you need to book to walk in Cabañeros National Park?
To do the walks on your own, no. You only book if you want the park’s free interpreter-guide, or in the specific cases each route sheet sets out (large groups, the guided Plaza de los Moros route).
What is the best time of year for these walks?
Autumn to spring. The waterfalls run much better between October and May, in September and October you can hear the deer rut, and in summer the heat on the raña is fierce and there is little shade.
