Why Toledo old town is worth the trip
Toledo joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986 under reference 379 and met four of the six possible cultural criteria. Few European cities gather so many: UNESCO recognises at once its value as a masterpiece, its influence on other cultures, its testimony to vanished civilisations and its standing as an exceptional architectural ensemble.
The reason lies in its layered history. It was the capital of the Visigothic kingdom, a frontier city of al-Andalus, the primatial see of the Church in Spain and the seat of power of Charles V. Every one of those layers left buildings still standing, and they all fit into a single morning walk.
The old town also works as a viewpoint over itself: the bend of the Tagus wraps around it on three sides and cuts it off from the rest of the city, so the skyline you see from the south — cathedral and Alcázar cut out against the rock — is practically the one El Greco painted.

Getting there from Cork Valley
From Cork Valley you take the CM-4155 towards San Pablo de los Montes and join the CM-401 heading for Toledo. It is 59 km, mountain road first and open plain afterwards. Parking inside the old town is awkward: the practical thing is to leave the car at the Safont or Miradero car parks and go up on the escalators.
When to go
The city is walked on foot and uphill, so July and August are hard around midday. Spring and autumn are the pleasantest seasons. If you come in summer, keep the middle of the day for interiors — cathedral, museums, synagogues — and leave the streets and viewpoints for sunrise or sunset, when the stone turns golden and the day-trippers have gone.
