Why Tembleque is worth the trip
The Plaza Mayor of Tembleque was finished in 1598 and keeps something uncommon: wooden galleries on three levels along three of its four sides, held up on the ground floor by Tuscan columns. It is, in practice, an open-air courtyard theatre that never went out of use.
Carved into the balustrades are the Maltese crosses of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, to which the town belonged. That detail places the square inside the network of Hospitaller commanderies that organised much of the Toledo Mancha.
It was declared a Historic Site on 13 March 1973. In 1653 Philip IV attended the town’s festivities here, which gives an idea of the use it has had for centuries as a stage for fiestas, bullfights and performances.
What to see
The wooden galleries
Three levels of galleries on three of the four sides, the element that makes the square unique.
The Tuscan columns
They hold up the ground-floor arcade and order the whole perimeter.
The Maltese crosses
Carved into the balustrades, they recall Tembleque’s membership of the Order of Saint John.
The parish church
A few metres from the square, it closes off the old town.
The rest of the old town
Mansions with coats of arms and the street plan of the Hospitaller town.

Getting there from Cork Valley
From Cork Valley it is 105 km by road, crossing the Montes de Toledo and dropping down to the plain of La Mancha. By distance, the sensible thing is to do it on the same day as Consuegra: both are in the Toledo Mancha and there is little ground between them.
When to go
The square is always open and costs nothing to see, so the criterion is light: in the afternoon the sun comes in through the galleries and brings out the wood. It works very well as a stop on a longer route through the Toledo Mancha, chained with Consuegra, which is close by.
