Why the Barrancas are worth the trip

Its official name is the Barrancas de Castrejón y Calaña Natural Monument, and it spreads across the municipalities of Burujón, Albarreal de Tajo and La Puebla de Montalbán, on the northern shore of the Castrejón reservoir. The water has carved away the clay into a system of gullies that at some points rises above a hundred metres.

The contrast is what hooks you: you arrive across an absolutely flat landscape of cereal fields and then, suddenly, the ground opens up. Hence the popular nickname of Toledo’s Grand Canyon, even if the scale is another matter.

It is also a privileged spot for birdwatching. Storks, ducks, herons and cormorants pass over the water; golden eagle and eagle owl breed on the cliffs. Among the mammals there are rabbit, hare, genet and wildcat.

What to see

  • The Cambrón viewpoint

The best known one, and the one that gives the head-on view of the cliffs over the reservoir. Accessible for people with reduced mobility.

  • The Los Enebros viewpoint

The second adapted viewpoint, with a different perspective over the whole formation.

  • The ecological path

A walk of about 4 kilometres linking the four main viewpoints along the edge of the cliffs.

  • The Castrejón reservoir

The stretch of the Tagus that gives the landscape its scale and draws the birdlife.

  • Birdwatching

Storks, ducks, herons, cormorants, golden eagle and eagle owl. Worth taking binoculars.

Getting there from Cork Valley

From Cork Valley it is 48 km by road: the closest outing in this selection. You get there from Burujón along a signposted track to the Cambrón viewpoint car park, and from there everything is on foot. It combines well with Toledo on the same day, because it is on the way.

When to go

Sunset is the moment: the low sun sets the clay alight and the cliffs go from ochre to red in a matter of minutes. At midday the colour flattens, and in summer there is no shade anywhere along the walk. After rain the ground is slippery at the edge of the cliffs; wear shoes with grip and keep your distance from the rim, which is unprotected.
