Why Cabañeros is worth the trip
Cabañeros protects a landscape that has all but vanished from the rest of the Mediterranean: quartzite ranges covered in scrub and, between them, the raña, a grass plain where deer and wild boar graze in plain sight. It has been called the Spanish Serengeti for precisely that reason.
The 2025 figures confirm it as an established destination: 85,953 visitors, against 77,824 in 2024. Almost 28% come from Madrid, and 87% name it as the main reason for the trip, not a stop along the way. Average declared satisfaction is 9.20 out of 10.
Hiking is the activity of three out of every four visitors. From Cork Valley the park is the natural gateway west: the estate sits in the Montes de Toledo, the same mountain system that Cabañeros protects along its best preserved stretch.
What to see
The raña
The great grass plain inside the park, where the wildlife gathers. It is toured by four-wheel drive with an authorised guide.
The deer rut
From mid-September to the first days of October the stags bellow at dawn and at dusk. It is the busiest moment of the year.
Boquerón del Estena
The best known walk, starting from Navas de Estena: a gorge with riverside woodland and fossils in the quartzite.
Casa Palillos visitor centre
The main information point, with an exhibition and the start of several trails.
The birds
Cinereous vulture, Spanish imperial eagle and black stork all breed in the park. Binoculars essential.
The night skies
With no light pollution around, it is one of the best areas in Spain for stargazing.

Getting there from Cork Valley
From Cork Valley it is 75 km by road to the Casa Palillos visitor centre, crossing the Montes de Toledo by way of San Pablo and Retuerta del Bullaque. The roads are mountain roads with plenty of bends: go in daylight and without rushing, above all at dawn, when most animals are crossing.
When to go
Autumn is the star season because of the deer rut, between mid-September and the first days of October; book the guided visit to the raña well in advance. Spring gives you the green raña and the birds in full breeding season. Summer is hard by day but excellent by night for stars. In winter the park empties and the light is spectacular.
