The windmills of Consuegra: the image of La Mancha
The row of white windmills on the Calderico hill, with La Muela castle beside them, is the most international postcard of La Mancha and the image everyone associates with Don Quixote.

Why Consuegra is worth the trip
The Calderico hill is a limestone ridge some 1,500 metres long running north to south, rising about a hundred metres above the plain of La Mancha. That position explains everything on top of it: the windmills catch the wind and the castle commands the pass.
The hill has been inhabited since very early on: Iberian occupation is documented from the sixth century before Christ. Roman Consuegra, the Moorish fortress and the castle of La Muela you visit today, tied to the Order of Saint John, were all layered onto that history.
The windmills each keep their own name and several can be visited inside. One of them, the Molino Bolero, works as the tourist office, so the first stop up there sorts out opening times and tickets.
What to see
The row of windmills
Twelve mills lined up along the crest of the hill, with the plain behind. The classic shot is taken from the southern end, with the castle coming into frame.
La Muela castle
A restored fortress on the same hill, with a keep and 360-degree views over La Mancha.
The Molino Bolero
Home to the tourist office: the place to ask which mills are open that day.
The machinery inside
Some mills keep the complete milling mechanism and it is demonstrated working on set dates.
The town of Consuegra
Down below, the Plaza de España and the town hall with its arcaded façade are worth a stop before going up.
The saffron landscape
In autumn the surrounding fields fill with saffron flowers, the traditional crop of the area.

Getting there from Cork Valley
From Cork Valley it is 111 km by road, crossing the Montes de Toledo and dropping down to the plain. It is the longest outing in this selection and works well as a full day, combined with Tembleque or a loop around the Toledo Mancha. You can drive up to the hill and park beside the mills.
When to go
Light is everything. At midday the hill is harsh and flat; at sunrise and above all at sunset the mills stand out against the sky and the plain fills with long shadows. Autumn adds the saffron in flower. In summer go up early: there is no shade at the top.
