Why Talavera is worth the trip

Talavera ceramics were inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, under reference 01462, in a joint nomination with Mexico that recognises the craft processes of Talavera in Puebla and Tlaxcala and those of Talavera de la Reina and El Puente del Arzobispo.

What makes the visit special is that the ceramics are not only in the museums: they are on the façades, on the benches, on the fountains and on the dados of the churches. Talavera holds 18 assets declared of cultural interest.

The greatest of them is the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Prado, listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest on 2 June 1993. Its Talavera tile dados, a metre and a half high, bring together work from the sixteenth, eighteenth and twentieth centuries, and the dome was painted by the ceramicist Ruiz de Luna. It is known as the Sistine Chapel of ceramics.

What to see

  • Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Prado

The most important tilework in the city, with dados 1.50 metres high from three different centuries.

  • Ruiz de Luna Ceramics Museum

Housed in the former convent of San Agustín, it walks through the history of Talavera production piece by piece.

  • The Prado gardens

The tree-lined promenade around the basilica, with ceramic benches and fountains.

  • The walls and the old town

Remains of the medieval walled enclosure beside the Tagus and the street plan of the historic centre.

  • Working workshops

Several potteries keep the traditional production going and you can watch the wheel and the hand-painting.

  • El Puente del Arzobispo

Downriver along the Tagus, it shares the same UNESCO inscription and is worth the detour.

Getting there from Cork Valley

From Cork Valley it is 63 km by road heading west, leaving the Montes de Toledo for the Tagus valley. It is a long half-day outing, and you can chain it with Oropesa on the same day if you set off early: both lie in the same direction.

When to go

Talavera visits well all year round because much of the route is indoors. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for a walk through the Prado gardens and along the Tagus. If you want to buy ceramics, go on a weekday: that is when the workshops are open and you can talk to the people who make them.
