Why the cathedral is worth the trip

Toledo Cathedral was raised over the city's main mosque, which in turn stood on the site of the Visigothic cathedral. Work started in 1226 and ran for more than two and a half centuries, so the building runs through the whole of Gothic from beginning to end.

In 2026 it marks its 800th anniversary. From May to 14 October 2026 it hosts the exhibition Primada, with more than 330 works across 2,000 square metres, over a hundred pieces restored for the occasion, and the first public showing of the original Bible of Saint Louis. There is work by El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán and Goya. By the end of August 2026 it had passed 25,000 visits.

With 9,975 reviews and a 4.7 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor, it is the most reviewed place in the province of Toledo — more than three times the next one. That is a fair measure of how unmissable it is.

What to see

  • El Transparente

Narciso Tomé's Baroque altarpiece, with a skylight cut through the vault so the sun falls on the tabernacle. The most photographed thing inside.

  • The sacristy

A picture gallery in its own right: El Greco's The Disrobing of Christ presides over a collection with Goya, Van Dyck and Caravaggio.

  • The choir

Double stalls carved with the chronicle of the conquest of Granada along the lower backs, the work of Rodrigo Alemán.

  • The high altar and retable

A polychrome Gothic retable from the late 15th century, one of the largest in Spain.

  • Cloister and Chapter House

Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a gallery of portraits of every archbishop of Toledo.

  • The tower and the Campana Gorda

The single tower on the north side holds one of the largest bells in Spain.

  • The Primada exhibition

Open until 14 October 2026 for the 800th anniversary. Check availability before you go.

Getting there from Cork Valley

It is 59 km from Cork Valley on the CM-4155 and CM-401. Once in Toledo the cathedral sits in the middle of the old town: park at Safont or Miradero and walk up, or take the escalators. From Plaza de Zocodover it is a five-minute walk.

When to go

The cathedral draws queues mid-morning and on Saturdays. The first hour after opening and the last of the afternoon are far quieter, and that is also when the light works best through the Transparente and the rose windows. If your trip coincides with the anniversary exhibition, expect heavier crowds and book ahead.
