Why the Alcázar is worth the trip
The Alcázar occupies the highest point in Toledo, which is why it has been fortified since Roman times. What stands today is the Renaissance palace Charles V commissioned over the medieval fortress, with four façades from four different periods and a columned courtyard at its heart.
It was destroyed during the siege of 1936 and rebuilt from the ground up. Since 2010 it has housed the Army Museum, and that move made it what it is now: the monument in the province of Toledo with the highest verified visitor figure after Puy du Fou. In 2024 it received 432,677 people, almost 13,000 more than the year before.
It has a practical advantage too: visible from everywhere, it works as a compass. And its terrace and surroundings give one of the best views of the river bend without leaving the old town.

Getting there from Cork Valley
It is 59 km from Cork Valley on the CM-4155 and CM-401. The Alcázar stands at the top of the old town, next to Plaza de Zocodover. From the Safont or Miradero car parks it is a walk of just over ten minutes, with escalators covering part of the climb.
When to go
The Alcázar is an indoor visit, so it works any day of the year and rescues a hot or wet afternoon. It closes on Mondays. If you are pairing it with the cathedral on the same day, leave the Alcázar for the afternoon: it is five minutes from Zocodover and the last hours are usually the quietest.
